High Fidelity the Musical is like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III

insofar as I simply refuse to believe that it ever happened.

Today's question: All time top 5 songs to listen to alone on your couch after a long day at work?

Yesterday's: Bonus points to Matty for an amazing High Fidelity reference but a minor deduction for using the word esoteric which is itself an awesome example of an esoteric word, points deducted from Nicole for bringing up the musical (because apparently we're now on a point system for DQD, who knew?). I've gotta give it to Becca because she covered everything in her answer. It was actually a complete answer. Well done. Honorable Mention to O-Train who would have tied Becca had he not started his post "Fuck Sudoku" because I happen to enjoy it after I finish the crossword.

Becca:
Each has its own merits and faults. I love Sudoku, but I hate when people say, "I don't like Sudoku...I'm no good at math." No math involved, genius.
As for crossword puzzles, a lot depends on your range and depth of knowledge. I may not know the name of any politician, but I can give you seven different synonyms for "odor."
All in all, I'm going to go for crosswords, because I feel way smarter when I finish one.

O-Train:
Fuck Sudoku. Crosswords are great at expanding your vocabulary and stimulating thought. Plus, crossword puzzles got me through several shitty classes at BU, like Chinese history and archaeology.

Well, crossword puzzles and Baileys in my coffee...

I guess this is one of those times my musical taste kinda doesn't work for me, because if I love a song, I can listen to it anytime, anywhere (thus my awesome party selections when I get ahold of the stereo)

I'm gonna go with some softer stuff in this case, a little less aggressive than I often like it. Some uplifting, some depressing.

1. The Beta Band - Dry the Rain - 'I will now sell five copies...' Fucking great song, lifts you up at the end.

2. The Beach Boys - God Only Knows - Beautiful song. Brian Wilson is the man.

3. The Beatles - For No One - may be the best heartbreak song ever written

4. Pearl Jam - Given to Fly - "a wave came crashin like a fist to the jaw/ delivered him wings, 'Hey look at me now'/Arms wide open with the sea as his floor/ Oh, power, oh ohhhh/ He's.. flying.....whole "

5. Arctic Monkeys - When the Sun Goes Down - Because I like thinking about whores once I'm done with work.

I concur Cardamone - my musical taste often works against me as well on this blog. But I continue to post because I like to play, be part of the whole thing, and contribute to the "conversation" - something I find to be, at times, more rewarding than winning.

1. Iggy Pop - I Never Met A Girl Like You Before (My anthem, my stripper song, the song I want to magically play every time I walk into the room)
2. Nick Gilder - Hot Child in the City (makes me feel powerful even when I'm feeling utterly powerless and dejected)
3. Journey - Faitfully (Because that was true love. He will love her always, faithfully, no matter how far apart they are. Because it's a circus life, really, under a big top world. And we all need the clowns, to make us laugh.)
4. Queen - I want to break free (the title pretty much says it all)
5. Styx - Come Sail Away (Again, title pretty much says it all - plus it has a great crescendo that has me belting out the words by the end)

AND for the record Raymond J., I was not promoting the musical, I was pointing out how ridiculous it is! I am as appalled as you are.

I know you weren't promoting it Nicole, but for what a piece of shit it was--and apparently it was an enormous piece of shit--even mentioning it was enough for a deduction of the fake points that I in absolutely no way keep track of. I keep score like the guys on Most Extreme Elimination Challenge, or Drew Carey on Whose Line, completely and totally arbitrarily.

That was a deserved deduction. SOme things shouldn't be mentioned in front of decent people, or even us.

You guys are ridiculous. And I love it.

An interesting variety I will post, but they say that's the spice of life, so with that said...

1. "Under Pressure" - Queen & David Bowie. Who doesn't love this song?

2. "Pressure" - Billy Joel. You can see a theme here.

3. "All In All" - Lifehouse. I guess you either love 'em or hate 'em. I love 'em.

4. "Send Me On My Way" - Rusted Root. Hardly any english sung but you can't help but sing along.

5. "Long Day" - Matchbox 20. The probably goes under the same category as the Lifehouse song.

After a long day, it's all about crashing, and this list reflects that (in no particular order):

1. Five For Fighting - "The Riddle" - There's just something uplifting about this song.

2. The Beatles - "With A Little Help From My Friends" Because good friends always have your back when shit hits the fan.

3. Elvis Perkins - "While You Were Sleeping" - Insomniatic, lullabyish tune from a new artist. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjGR2JgVeOc)

4. Bob Marley - "No Woman No Cry" - A very calming, very soothing reggae beat with the repeated chorus, "Everything's gonna be alright."

5. Louis Armstrong - "What A Wonderful World" - Going out on a classic with such an inviting, peaceful melody.

Honorable Mention:
Joe Walsh - "Life's Been Good"
Jeff Buckley - "Hallelujah"

Well, I guess when I get home from a long day, I can go either of two ways:
(1) Decompress, zone out, and fall under a semi-melencholic spell. OR (2) Rock this mother out like it's my birthday. Therefore, I give you not one, but TWO lists. The first list is probably more along the lines of what you asked for, but personally, I find it more fulfilling to go ape shit after a long day than to plop on the couch.

List UNO

1. "Lights" by Journey. "I wanna get back to my city by the bay..." I know your technically not from San Francisco, but everyone's heart is always left there.

2. "(Sitting on) The dock of the bay" by Otis Redding. I just recently found out Redding wrote this while living in house boat in Sausalito. Somehow, that makes me feel special...and it's a damn good song.

3. "Ground Control to Major Tom" by David Bowie.
Ok, so this one isn't about San Francisco, but David Bowie is awesome.

4. "Please Forgive Me" by David Gray. Not really sure what ever happened to Gray. However, his White Ladder album was so good. This track of his is my favorite.

5. "Auto Rock" by Mogwai. Another good track of theirs that I like is "I know you are but what am I." Sometimes, it's just nice to listen to music that doesn't have lyrics.

List DUE (or DOS for our spanish speaking friends)

1. "Layla" by Eric Clapton. The guitar riffs in the intro is all you need. But the entire song is pretty great.

2. "American Woman" by the Guess Who. Whenever I hear this song I think of that scene from American Beauty when Kevin Spacey quits his job and is in his car smoking a joint while driving home. It's that utter feeling of triumphant glory. Damn the man.

3. "Where is My Mind" by the Pixies. No explanation necessary.

4. "20th Century Boy" by T. Rex. Another great guitar intro. You'll be more likely to start jumping off the couch and throwing shit rather than sitting on one. har har har.

5. "Age of Consent" by New Order. This song just makes me happy.

Martina, I may not know you, but based on your lists - can we be friends?
