Movies/lit: Inspired by O-Train

Here's the scenario: You're remaking The Great Gatsby, what current actors do you cast for the major roles? The Major roles being Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Jordan Baker, and Tom Buchanan.

One Caveat: You're casting the film as these actors are TODAY!

I chose these characters based on who I best thought could be the character, but also who I would want to watch as that character.

Nick Carraway - Adam Brody
Jay Gatsby - Paul Rudd
Daisy Buchanan - Rachel McAdams
Jordan Baker - Kate Bosworth
Tom Buchanan - Casey Affleck

I don't particularly like any actors out there right now, so this has been a challenge. Second, remakes suck. Third, movies based on classic works of literature will never be as good as the book, NEVER! So with that, I've given this some thought, and here is my list:

Nick Carraway: Billy Crudup. I think he has a good temperment for the role. He's soft-spoken and kind of the average every man's man.

Jay Gatsby: Christian Bale. Granted, he's British, but he's proven that he can play the rich American in roles for American Psycho and Batman Begins. I was thinking perhaps Jude Law, but he's just too damn pretty.

Daisy Buchanan: Amy Adams. She was really cute in Junbug if you haven't seen it (i recommend).
I was going to pick Rachel McAdams, but then I thought she might be a little too sultry, kind of along the lines of Scarlett Johansson.

Tom Buchanan: Clive Owen. I know, another Brit. But he was such an asshole in Closer, and he's got that perfect brute physique.

Jordan Baker: Keira Knightley. She's seductive yet strong. And i know...she's also british, and I realize it's probably going against everything the American novel stands for, but like I said earlier, I don't like a lot of actors out there, and the one's I do happen to be from England.

I wanted to take into account acting ability (which Nicole seems to have forgotten...Kate Bosworth shows emotion as often as she eats a cheeseburger), on-screen chemistry, and who would make the kiddies come out to the theaters. Let's face it, if I'm remaking this film, I want to make some money. I wanted to do Rachel McAdams as Daisy, but I thought it would be billed as a Notebook rip-off. Therefore, I ended up with:

Nick: Gabriel Macht
Gatsby: Ryan Gosling
Daisy: Ali Larter
Jordan: Elisha Cuthbert
Tom: Milo Ventimiglia

I've given this a lot of thought, and here's my response, in an effort to best capture the era, the characters, and the story:

Jay Gatsby -- Leo DiCaprio, though a younger George Clooney would have gotten the nod.

Nick Carraway -- Matt Damon
(Honorable Mention: Ed Norton)

Daisy Buchanan -- Charlize Theron

Tom Buchanan -- Clive Owen
(Honorable Mention: a younger Russell Crowe)

Jordan Baker -- Rachel McAdams

I wanted Jordan Baker to be played by someone vapid and uninteresting..thus the Kate Bosworth choice (in my humble defense) :)
